Our traditional empanada was created half a century ago by my grandmother, Olga or ‘Coca’ as we used to call her.
She is the one who deserves all the praise for this delicious recipe.
My grandmother was born and raised in Santiago, Chile in 1920. She used to love cooking and one of her best meals was her beef empanadas. This is the recipe that was passed down to my mother and later to me.
At The Empanada Shop – Authentically Chilean, we seek to provide our customers with the same enjoyable experience my family has when eating empanadas. We want our customers to feel the love and care we put into our empanadas.
We know you will fall in love with the taste.
After two generations, and after immigrating to Canada over 30 years ago, I know our Coca is smiling knowing that we decided to bring her delicious recipe to life and share it with people almost 9000km away from our homeland.
I believe this is one of the best ways to honour her.
Thank you for giving our recipe a chance in the big world
Our baked empanadas are not only delicious and made with fresh ingredients, they are the healthier choice.
Empanadas can be enjoyed baked or deep fried but we have opted to stick with our traditional recipe of baking them which also makes them the healthier option.
Below are a few reasons why eating fried food is not the healthiest option
Deep-fried food can lead to heart diseases and cancer
When you deep fry foods in oil, the high temperature involved in cooking them causes the starch in the food to convert to carcinogens (cancer-causing substances). Exposure to high levels of these carcinogens can lead to heart diseases and cancer. Baking requires little or no added oil, thus does not cause any reaction in foods, making them healthier.
Deep-fried food can cause damage to heart, kidneys and lungs
Heating oil at high temperatures and deep frying it with starchy foods can lead to oxidation of oils. The oxidised oils can cause many possible health problems including damage to the heart, kidney and lungs. Consuming oxidised oils can also lead to the increased risk of high blood pressure and atherosclerosis.
Calories
Frying is a method where the food is submerged in oil at a high temperature. Oil is a saturated fat and is therefore, high in calories. The addition of oil in frying adds to the calorie count of the food. However, baking does not add any additional calories and fats to the foods you cook and is thus always preferred over frying.
When you enjoy our empanadas you can rest assured that we have tried our best to provide a quality and healthier product.
